How We Document: The Design System Documentation Survey

Being in the space of design system documentation, we’ve seen first-hand how the space has matured, grown and shifted over the last five or so years. We’ve also noticed a small change in the last year — we’re reaching the limits of what we can do with our existing best practices and infrastructure, and it feels like we’re on the precipice of some exciting changes.

So, we thought it’d be a good opportunity to take a step back and assess where we’re at right now. Starting today, we’re launching our big ‘ol industry survey called How We Document. We will be collecting responses until October 29th, 2021. After that we will be analysing the data, pulling out insights and releasing a report in December 2021.

What are we hoping to find out? It’s full of questions about you and your team, your design system, your documentation practices and tooling. We’ll also follow up with folks who have interesting setups or to add more flesh to any of the insights that seem interesting or useful. We are also interested in cutting the data to figure out how the smaller design orgs do it compared to the enterprise companies. Finally, we’re hoping to provide some ideas or suggestions out of this data to help orgs make their own documentation better.
