Summary

The talk explains how Design Systems can have a great impact beyond efficiency. It is based around a few main areas of nontraditional design system impact: How do you connect your product and marketing design to create a seamless omnichannel customer experience? How to ensure that your brand is alive not only on the pages of a brand book? Can design systems improve design decision-making & consistency of the design across the entire company, so even non-designers can create decent designs? I’m taking the audience on a journey to answer those questions and show how multidimensional design systems can be a great solution to the challenges many organizations face and how they can be the source of innovation.

Key takeaways

Multidimensional design systems might seem complex, but they create simplicity for their users from the entire company. Balancing autonomy and seamless experience is possible with the right people and structure built for connection via Design System. The system will ensure market needs if it’s created by the domain that includes distributed designers close to them. Automation & motion are the future; accessibility & processes are a must. Multidimensionality is the way forward. Diverse teams inspire each other, learn together, and innovate on the border of their specialisations.

Value of the talk

It shows that Design Systems could (and sometimes should) be much more than a library of UI Components. It explains how system thinkers can have a wider impact on their organisations beyond the product using their skills and unique way of thinking.

I’m not aware of talks that explore this topic in such a holistic way. My goal was to achieve compelling storytelling through a clear structure that engages by providing a chronological description of our struggles, numerous real-life examples, showcasing our team (how we look, how we work, and how we have fun), humour, visuals, and lots of videos. The talk was presented at the last Figma Schema conference, and based on the audience’s reaction, I can confidently say that these objectives were met. The design system community was thoroughly engaged, and the talk inspired them in many ways.
