Custom templates

Custom templates

Enterprise teams can now create and manage their own set of custom templates. Templates are a quick and easy way to speed up creating new documentation, while ensuring you maintain consistency and quality.

Templates exist at a team level and can be shared across multiple styleguides. They are available to all editors when creating new pages.

Templates do not stay in sync after the template has been added to a styleguide (i.e. making changes to the template won’t update pages created from that template). Check out our synced pages feature to create content that stays in sync in multiple places over time.

Creating a new template

  1. Go to the Templates tab from your Styleguides dashboard.
  2. From here, you can create a new template or edit, delete and duplicate existing templates.
  3. When creating a template, it can be given a name and a description to help identify it and inform editors on when it should be used.

Content blocks in templates

Templates behave a little differently from the regular zeroheight editor.

Complex content blocks (design uploads, code blocks, embeds, etc.) will insert placeholder blocks into your template. Placeholder blocks are represented in pink with the name of the block in the template editor.

This will allow editors to update these placeholder blocks with appropriate content when the template is used in your styleguides.

Other contents, like text and simple content blocks (callouts, dividers, tables, etc.), behave as they would in the regular editor, and whatever is included in the template will be inserted into your styleguides when the template is used.

You can create page tabs in the template editor, which will behave in the same way that page tabs work in styleguides.

Under each template, there are icons representing the content blocks present in the template.

FAQs

I’m on an Enterprise plan but can’t see templates; how come?

Templates rely on the new zeroheight editor. For details on this, check out this handy guide.

If I make an update to a template, will this update existing pages in my styleguides?

No, this will only update the template itself and any pages created from this template in future. Check out our synced pages feature to create content that stays in sync in multiple places over time.

I’m not on an Enterprise plan; how can I use templates?

Custom templates are only available to Enterprise teams on the new zeroheight editor. If this doesn’t apply to you, you might want to try creating hidden pages and using these as templates. Whenever you want to create a new page, duplicate the template page, fill out the content and unhide the page.
