Design Systems: Beyond the Button

Episode 7: How do we collaborate around a design system?

April 23, 2024

This time, we’re tackling how to collaborate on a design system. We’ll talk about the tools you should be using, who should be doing what, and how you can create a review and governance process that ensures your design system site is accurate and consistent.

In the first half, we’ll talk about some of the things we’ve seen design system teams do well to foster collaboration. Those methods range from creating a council to religiously relying on project management tools like Jira. And, of course, some great teams have a combination of methods to keep everyone on the same page. In the second half, we’re open for questions! Bring your ideas and queries about collaboration for Michelle and the audience to weigh in on.

  • Eventbrite’s Design System mentions people who’ve contributed to a component. (Scroll to the bottom of the page and see “Marmalade celebrates what you create.”) This is a great way to acknowledge people’s involvement and get people excited about the design system.
  • How We Document Webinar #1 on People and Teams: We talk about how design systems are meant to provide stability. So, when collaborating, think of how involving a role or process contributes to or disrupts stability for the design system team.
  • Webinar on May 8th: Automation in Design Systems: What to Automate, How, and When
  • zeroheight Showcase: check out how other teams are using zeroheight or inspiration on how you may want to organize your design system documentation or set up zeroheight as your “launchpad.”
