Kicking off World Design Systems Week

We’re excited to announce the first-ever World Design Systems Week! September 19-23, 2022, will be a week dedicated to celebrating design systems and their makers.

As a Design Advocate, I try to figure out what the design community needs and how to connect people. I noticed design system makers were trying to figure out how other teams were crafting their design systems – their UI libraries, coded components, documentation, and how they were creating teams and review processes.

Creating a design system or evolving it can be messy and complicated. Just like UX design, most of that is behind the scenes. When we look at a well-documented design system site, we all want to know, “How did they get there?”

How beneficial would it be to share our approaches, lessons learned, team, wins, and more? We could learn from each other, reach our goals, and avoid costly mistakes. I wanted to create a space to facilitate, that and I thought about having a day to celebrate. We soon realized a day was not enough, and World Design Systems Week was born.

World Design Systems Week is the week we come together as a global community. For the week, locations worldwide will be hosting events geared towards their local community. The idea is to connect people to share thoughts and ideas about design systems. This year’s theme is building bridges. Design systems not only unify products but also bring together designers, developers, and content writers. This week can build bridges across companies and products. When we’re better connected, we have a network we can turn to for guidance in navigating the complexity of crafting design systems. World Design Systems Week is also a week to recognize and celebrate the tireless efforts of design system makers.

For this first World Design Systems Week, I encourage you to attend an event in your location.
